Szabad Waldorf Általános Iskola és Gimnázium, Alapfokú Művészetoktatási Intézmény ( HUNGARY / Szeged)
The association maintaining the school was established in 1998 for the reason of spreading Waldorf pedagogy in Szeged and its surroundings. The founders of the association - most of them parents - established a multigrade kindergarten with one class in 1999, and also the Free Waldorf School in 2000. With an increasing number of classes, the school has become a permanent institution, operating with 12+1 grades. Our first class began 12th grade in September 2011. The institution operates as a basic-level art school, too. All of the educational sectors are maintained by the association.
The institution manages integrated educational process. Experts take care of children with special needs in the frame of personal, individual lessons. We have 250 pupils in the 13 grades of the school. We form cooperative, conscious, studious personalities and communities with healthy mental attitudes, participating actively in common tasks.
We consider it very important to maintain a close relationship with parents (since they were those who established the association managing the school and kindergarten). We also lay special emphasis on the dissemination of our pedagogical objectives and results.
We have a good relationship with the Municipality of Szeged and we usually participate in city events. From 2007 we teach in a formerly closed down school building offered to us by the Municipality.
Most importantly, Waldorf institutions are self-asserting, democratic and open towards those who are interested. The institution maintains itself financially. Another basic principle is not being affected by political and financial factors, this way letting the fulfilment of the main objective of Waldorf pedagogy, which is the professional development of young individuality. Waldorf pedagogy, as an alternative approach blooming here for almost a decade, is a child-centered method developing skills and competencies, having the objective of educating self-conscious, individual personalities being able to make free decisions in a fearless atmosphere.
We can further improve our main objectives, activities and methods in the frame of this international partnership, namely community development, project method, experimental (informal, non-formal) learning and the development of practical skills.
