Istituto Tecnico Commerciale e per Geometri "Enrico Fermi" ( ITALY / Pontedera)
The school is located in Pontedera, a small industrial town in the province of Pisa, with a population of about 26000 inhabitants. The worldwide famous Piaggio industries, whose most famous product is the "Vespa" motor-bike, are based in Pontedera. As a high share of the production process has been delocalised abroad in order to benefit from lower labour costs, the economy has been declining in the latest years.
The school is a technical school, where two thirds of the students specialize in economics, ICT, tourism and marketing while about one third of the students specialize in the building industry. Many pupils come from nearby villages and surrounding rural areas, their families are quite simple and the students do not often get the chance to travel or get in touch with different countries and cultures. This situation has improved in recent years thanks to several Comenius partnerships we have been carrying out with different European countries. This multilateral partnership will be a great opportunity for the students to further widen their points of view, understand different cultures and acquire a European perspective in education. As the number of students coming from different European countries, in particular from Eastern Europe, Albania and North Africa has increased, a project focusing on active citizenship would be very useful to teach tolerance, respect and appreciation of difference by integrating different cultures into daily school life.
Students will improve their English and other language communication skills, their knowledge of ICT and modern media, their understanding of other European countries, their sense of active citizenship. They will also achieve a new level of self-esteem and a greater awareness of the importance of intercultural relationships.
Teachers will improve their education skills, exchange information and knowledge and develop enthusiasm for international learning and teaching.
